Nonprofit Employers Left Out of Health Care Reform

September 17, 2009

As I have posted in past blogs (Sept. 1 & Aug.14), we have been working to insure that any incentives for small employers who provide health coverage to their employees, should also provide incentives to small nonprofit employers.  Most of the versions of health care reform, including the latest version from Senator Max Baucus, do not provide incentives for nonprofits.  A recent article in the New York Times explores this issue.

Senator Snowe is an important member of the Senate Finance Committee that is chaired by Senator Baucus and they will begin debate on this bill next week.   Senator Snowe is very devoted to the issue and some excellent work has been done by her staff on how to efficiently provide incentives to nonprofits through the tax code – easier said than done.  We will be sure to keep you posted on these deliberations.
